We will soon be wrapping up our major maintenance project, called a turnaround, that began in late April to overhaul equipment on several process units. Since then, MRC has invested more than $70 million in equipment upgrades that involved teams of refinery personnel, as well as our contract business partners, who brought in more than 600 Building Trades craftworkers through local unions to assist us in completing the turnaround. Beginning today through the end of May, we plan to restart equipment in a safe and controlled manner, following standard start-up procedures. Restarting equipment has the potential to cause flaring until each process unit is safely restarted and running reliably. Importantly, we will be following a flare minimization plan similar to the one used to shut the equipment down in April, which we successfully achieved without flaring. Our goal is to minimize or prevent flaring during the restart process. Flares are an essential part of a refinery’s integrated, engineered safety systems designed to safely manage excess combustible gases by burning them off efficiently and effectively. You can learn more about flaring on our website: https://martinezrefiningcompany.com/about-flaring/. This message continues our commitment to communicating openly with our neighbors about refinery operations.
