About us

Martinez Refining Company (MRC) manufactures the cleanest motor fuels in the world, providing an affordable and reliable supply of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel to the Bay Area.

Our refinery is located on 860 acres and contains 35 process units, each of which plays an important role in how we turn crude oil into fuels that help provide the highest standards of mobility in history.

Our daily workforce consists of 585 full-time employees and 300 embedded contractors. Additionally, 1,000+ Building Trades craftworkers are added during the refinery’s major maintenance activities, which we call “turnarounds.”

In 2024, MRC provided (approximately):

  • 25% of the Bay Area’s gasoline supply
  • 55% of Oakland and Sacramento Airports’ jet fuel supply
  • 40% of San Jose and San Francisco Airports’ jet fuel supply

Martinez Refinery was built in 1915 with significant expansions made in the 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s. Today, it is a modern refinery with advanced automation, controls, and technology. MRC purchased the refinery from Shell in 2020 for $1 Billion and continues to make annual reinvestments in the site between $100 to $300 Million.

On Sunday, September 27, 2026, an important community event will take place:

The Martinez Refining Company and the Martinez Education Foundation on behalf of the Martinez Unified School District will host the 24th Annual MRC-MEF Run for Education.

The event will take place from 8:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., and the following streets will be closed during that time:
Ward Street (between Berrellesa and Court Street)
Alhambra (between Marina Vista and Soto Street)
Marina Vista (between Berrellesa and Shell Avenue)
Escobar (between Berrellesa and Miller)
Soto (between Berrellesa and Alhambra)
One lane of Berrellesa (between Soto and Marina Vista) and one southbound lane will be open.
Court (between Ward Street and Marina Vista).

Please see the map of the event, including available detours, and use an alternate route for your early morning activities.
