About us
Martinez Refining Company (MRC) manufactures the cleanest motor fuels in the world, providing an affordable and reliable supply of gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel to the Bay Area.
Our refinery is located on 860 acres and contains 35 process units, each of which plays an important role in how we turn crude oil into fuels that help provide the highest standards of mobility in history.
Our daily workforce consists of 585 full-time employees and 300 embedded contractors. Additionally, 1,000+ Building Trades craftworkers are added during the refinery’s major maintenance activities, which we call “turnarounds.”
In 2024, MRC provided (approximately):
- 25% of the Bay Area’s gasoline supply
- 55% of Oakland and Sacramento Airports’ jet fuel supply
- 40% of San Jose and San Francisco Airports’ jet fuel supply
Martinez Refinery was built in 1915 with significant expansions made in the 1960s, 1980s, and 1990s. Today, it is a modern refinery with advanced automation, controls, and technology. MRC purchased the refinery from Shell in 2020 for $1 Billion and continues to make annual reinvestments in the site between $100 to $300 Million.

The refinery runs internal tests Mondays between 11:00 am and 12:00 pm to ensure our sirens are operational. During the tests on Monday, sirens will typically be heard by our fence line neighbors and potentially beyond. Testing our sirens ensures that we run the refinery to the highest safety standards possible to protect the community, employees, and contract partners.

Additionally, the Contra Costa County Office of the Sheriff operates the Community Warning System (CWS) and runs additional sire tests. 24th Annual MRC-MEF Run for Education Sets a Record – Raises $281,000 for Martinez Education Foundation and Martinez Unified Schools
What happens when you combine 672 participants, more than a hundred volunteers, dozens of sponsors and Martinez community pride? You get a successful 24th Annual MRC-MEF Run for Education that raised a record-setting $281,000 for the Martinez Education Foundation (MEF) and Martinez Unified School District (MUSD) schools.
Alhambra High School’s Marching Band and Color Guard established the festive mood, just before runners and walkers started the 5K Race. MEF President and Run Director, Jack Funk said, “We are so pleased that for the 24th consecutive year, the community of Martinez has come out to support our students and our schools. It is with tremendous gratitude that we receive the ongoing support of the Martinez Refining Company, Run sponsors, runners, and walkers. Once again, we have raised over a quarter million dollars which will directly benefit the students of the Martinez Unified School District. Besides enjoying this fun-filled morning together, we are thrilled to know that our students, our schools, and therefore our community will benefit. Thank you again to MRC and all of our sponsors”.
MEF encourages MUSD Staff to apply for grants for books, technology, equipment, musical instruments, and instructional materials that supplement their classroom. Since the refinery started the Run in 2003, it has raised $2.2 million to support K–12 supplies and educational programs in MUSD. In addition to underwriting the cost of the Run, three years ago the refinery started the MRC-MEF Fairways Fore Futures Golf Tournament to increase fundraising efforts. Refinery Manager, Bevan Lewis says “Our contract partners generously sponsor our Golf Tournament and Run. Together, we are committed to supporting local education, and it’s exciting to see the programs and supplies that are funded because of the MRC-MEF Run for Education.”
In the 2025-2026 school year the Martinez Education Foundation funded 57 grant requests totaling $227,219. Interim Martinez Unified School District Superintendent Janelle Eyet, “We appreciate the long-standing tradition of the Run for Education and the partnership between MRC and MEF to bring our community together in support of our schools. The money raised from the MRC-MEF Run for Education Week directly supports all MUSD schools with programs and services to enrich students' educational experiences”.
Nolin Searls, of Martinez, won the men's 5K, and Ashley Denecour, of Lafayette, won the women's 5K. The complete results are posted at the MRC-MEF Run for Education event page at https://runsignup.com/Race/CA/Martinez/MRCMEFRunforEducation.
